Event Description

Phoenicia, the tiny hamlet in the Catskill Mountains with a worldwide reputation, will once again be the centerpiece of a town-wide art studio and sculpture tour this summer on July 17-19.  The Phoenicia Art Studio Tour (formerly the Shandaken Art Studio Tour) encompasses all dozen or so hamlets in the Town of Shandaken but has been renamed to reflect Phoenicias growing reputation as a great escape from NYC and environs. The Phoenicia Art Studio Tour offers the opportunity to enjoy the work of over three dozen artists in studios, galleries, art parks and special exhibitions, in a setting of cool green mountains and tranquil vistas. On Friday, July 17 at 7PM, bring a lawn chair and enjoy the "Word of Mouth" kick-off party at Mama's Boy in Phoenicia. It's a free evening of spoken word, tall tales and stories by some of the region's favorite writers. (At Phoenicia Arts Upstairs, 60 Main St. in case of rain.) Pick up a free 28 page tour catalog with detailed maps, photos and descriptions of the artists' work.  Use this guidebook while on the tour, and all year-round to set up personal artist studio visits so youll have plenty of time to appreciate what the artists have to offer.

Spend Saturday the 18th from 11AM to 5PM exploring Shandaken's art studios. A tip: take the "Chichester Canape Trail". The art studios in Chichester will have platters of delectable finger food provided by Amy's Takeaway (where Mark Loete’s photos are on display.) Then return to Phoenicia Arts Upstairs by 6PM for the do-not-miss reception. This gallery pulsates with creative energy: traditional and cutting edge visual art, jazz concerts, and notorious, uproarious 3rd Saturday openings. See, be seen, and make the scene at the hub of hubbub in the middle of Main Street. Harper Blanchet, Lucy Lasky and Bronson Eden will have solo shows. Janet Robinson will create a trance inducing projection environment to go along with her original musical scores. Wendy Grossman’s Shabbily Chik Furniture and Veggie Gourmet will be there too.. Many other artists will also have work there.
There are great new artists in 2015, and some prodigal artists return, including vivacious Christina Varga, serenely misty Christie Scheele, multi-ethnic Durga Yael Bernhard, and biomorphic Astrid Nordness. See "Qwalts" (wall quilts) by Karen Charman, and lots more, including creations by Jerilynn Babroff and Mona Jacobs. Visit woodworking studios of Doug Houska, Gerard Ryan and John Byer. Get hot at Cornelius McGillicuddy's working iron forge.  Howard Harrison and Karin Wolf are nature photographers

Studios will also be open to visitors all day Sunday, July 19, from 11AM to 5PM. For the adventurous, there's 49A  Art Park way up in Highmount on Route 49A, just above the Belleayre Ski Center on the road in front of the Galli-Curci historic mansion!

A highlight of the Phoenicia Art Studio Tour in 2015 will be the CIC Sculpture Park at the Maurice D. Hinchey Catskill Interpretive Center on Rt. 28 in Mount Tremper, just west of Boiceville. This 62 acre park hosts sculpture by several regional artists: Ze'ev Willy Neumann,  Dave Channon, Joe Chirchirillo, and Naomi Teppich, among others Steve Heller’s Fabulous Furniture studio is new to the tour too. beyond the art, there are beautiful meadows and a nature trail through wetlands, over hills, and along the banks of Esopus Creek.
The long longed-for visitor welcome building will be open in time for the tour. Inside, you'll find a three dimensional topographic map describing the history of the region as well as interactive pads to help visitors and residents figure out what to do in the Catskill Park and Forest Preserve. The CIC is a partnership with New York State DEC, New York City DEP, Catskill Watershed Corporation, other local non-profit organizations, and the Catskill Center - which will oversee its operations.

The totally free self guided art tour will span the entire town of Shandaken from Mount Tremper to Pine Hill, with more than 30 artist studios, galleries, exhibitions and events. Visitors are encouraged to book room reservations early as Phoenicia draws people from near and far. Maximize your experience! Go to  www.ShandakenArt.com to see extensive e-galleries of the artists works, get late-breaking tour updates, and real clear driving directions.
