Phoenicia, the tiny hamlet in the Catskill Mountains with a worldwide reputation, will once again be the centerpiece of a town-wide art studio and sculpture tour this summer on July 17-19. The Phoenicia Art Studio Tour (formerly the Shandaken Art Studio Tour) encompasses all dozen or so hamlets in the Town of Shandaken but has been renamed to reflect Phoenicia’s growing reputation as a great escape from NYC and environs. The Phoenicia Art Studio Tour offers the opportunity to enjoy the work of over three dozen artists in studios, galleries, art parks and special exhibitions, in a setting of cool green mountains and tranquil vistas. On Friday, July 17 at 7PM, bring a lawn chair and enjoy the "Word of Mouth" kick-off party at Mama's Boy in Phoenicia. It's a free evening of spoken word, tall tales and stories by some of the region's favorite writers. (At Phoenicia Arts Upstairs, 60 Main St. in case of rain.) Pick up a free 28 page tour catalog with detailed maps, photos and descriptions of the artists' work. Use this guidebook while on the tour, and all year-round to set up personal artist studio visits so you’ll have plenty of time to appreciate what the artists have to offer.
Studios will also be open to visitors all day Sunday, July 19, from 11AM to 5PM. For the adventurous, there's 49A Art Park way up in Highmount on Route 49A, just above the Belleayre Ski Center on the road in front of the Galli-Curci historic mansion!
The totally free self guided art tour will span the entire town of Shandaken from Mount Tremper to Pine Hill, with more than 30 artist studios, galleries, exhibitions and events. Visitors are encouraged to book room reservations early as Phoenicia draws people from near and far. Maximize your experience! Go to www.ShandakenArt.com to see extensive e-galleries of the artists’ works, get late-breaking tour updates, and real clear driving directions.
This project is made possible with funds from the Decentralization Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature and administered by Arts Mid-Hudson. The Catskill Heritage Alliance sponsors the event.
