Catskills “how do I love thee, let me count the ways.” During the month of February, when our thoughts turn to the persons and things we love, the Commons Gallery will exhibit paintings by Halcottsville artist Alix Hallman Travis that “count” the ways she loves her Catskill home. There are paintings documenting many of her beloved Catskill features: hanging wash drying in a gentle breeze; roses draped over a front porch, winding roads, canoes, vegetable stands, bank barns, the railroad snaking its way through a tunnel of trees, a favorite swimming hole, tiny hamlets, music, wildflowers, hilltop cemeteries, steeples and even the weather. Each of Travis’s paintings is a detail from the whole of our place. The paintings in this Valentine exhibition are of different media, shapes and sizes but together each contributes to a colorful and lively depiction of this place we love and call home. the Commons Gallery, 785 Main St. in the Commons, offers gift certificates and accepts credit cards. Hours: Saturdays, noon to 4:00, by appointment (call 607 326-7073) and through March, while Travis is using a portion of the warm gallery as a studio one may find her at work there during the week. Come in, have a cup of tea, chat and enjoy the art work.
