Event Description
Headwaters History Days June 16-18
Talks, exhibits, open houses and tours will be offered in the Towns of Middletown, Roxbury and Shandaken when Headwaters History Days shines a light on local heritage keepers June 16-18.
Eleven historic sites and organizations linked by the Catskill Mountains Scenic Byway (NYS Route 28) and NYS Route 30, will celebrate the history, culture, folklife and landscape of the Central Catskills.
All events are free during this event which is part of Path Through History Weekend in New York State. For more information, photos and updates, find Headwaters History Days on Facebook.
A new venue in this fourth Headwaters History Days is the Pine Hill Community Center. On Friday at 7 p.m., the center will host an illustrated presentation by Robert Selkowitz on the 1903 Automobile Endurance Run which tested early drivers on a rugged route from Weehawken, NJ to Pittsburgh. The route took the operators of 34 vehicles up present State Route 28 from Kingston to Pine Hill where they stayed overnight before proceeding in driving rain through Margaretville, Andes, Delhi and westward.
Selkowitz will talk about this fascinating chapter in history and the “Catskill Conquest Pilot Rally” of vintage autos he is coordinating September 23 and 24 to commemorate the 1903 event.
Also in Pine Hill, the Shandaken Museum in a former school on Academy Street will be open

Saturday and Sunday from 10 to 4.
Attention railroad history fans! John Duda, railroad enthusiast and postcard collector, will offer a talk on “The U&D in Fleischmanns” at 3 p.m. Saturday at Skene Memorial Library, Main St., Fleischmanns. The 1901 stone library is next door to the Greater Fleischmanns Museum of Memories which will be open both days of the weekend from noon to 3 p.m. and will include a new railroad display.
But wait, there’s more for train buffs! The Empire State Railway Museum in Phoenicia will be open Saturday and Sunday from 11 to 4 with exhibits on the Ulster & Delaware Railroad. And the U&D Railroad Historical Society’s Museum at the former depot on Bridge Street, Roxbury will be open on Saturday from 10 to 4.
While in Roxbury, be sure to stop at the Methodist Church on Main Street for a rare ‘tour’ of the inner workings of the venerable Town Clock Saturday from 10 to 2. Climb the tower stairs for an insider’s view with clock keeper and Town Historian Anthony Liberatore.  Photographs and documents of this historic town on the East Branch will also be on display.
There will be a guided walking tour of the hamlet of Roxbury, a Preserve America community, on Saturday at 10 with Carolynn Faraci. Meet at Jay Gould Memorial Reformed Church. The 1894 church, built in memory of railroad magnate and Roxbury native Jay Gould, will be open for self-guided visits from 10 to 2. Be sure to stop in to see the magnificent pipe organ, the vaulted oak sanctuary and the Tiffany stained glass windows.
Weaver Tabitha Gilmore Barnes will demonstrate spinning using an Ashford traditional spinning wheel from 10 to 1:30 Saturday at the Pakatakan Farmers' Market at the 1898 Kelly Brothers Round Barn, Route 30, Halcottsville.  She will also have an antique walking spinning wheel and a double band treadle spinning wheel, along with a yarn winder for spun wool.
Just down the road, at Hubbell Family Farm, visitors can marvel at rural ingenuity when the vintage sawmill is powered up for a demonstration at 1 p.m. Sunday. The demonstration will be followed by a walking tour of the farm, where Highland cattle and heritage breed chickens and pigs are raised, maple syrup is produced and cider is pressed at this eighth-generation farmstead.
The Old Stone Schoolhouse in Dunraven, two miles west of Margaretville, will be open from 10 to 4 Saturday to give visitors a glimpse of how youngsters were taught in a one-room school. Generations of local students learned the three Rs and more at this school which was built of stone in 1862 after two previous wooden schools had burned.
An illustrated talk on the rich, famous and forgotten of Highmount will be offered at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Historical Society of the Town of Middletown hall, 778 Cemetery Rd., Margaretville. HSM President Diane Galusha will share her research on the hotels, estates, businesses, schools and early families who populated this busy crossroads community before two ski centers became the main attraction. Rare footage of a train navigating the famed horseshoe curve between Pine Hill and Highmount will be part of the program.
